After three years of anticipation since its proposal in 2020, the Literacy Project: Peer-to-Peer Tutoring has finally become a reality in Olongapo City.
In a heartfelt initiative, the Department of Education-Schools Division Office of Olongapo City carefully chose ten schools as beneficiaries for the pilot program. These schools were provided with essential learning materials and equipment, including laminating machines, bond paper, storage boxes, whiteboards, books, tutoring aids, and school supplies like notebooks, pencils, crayons, and bags.
The reading coordinators and tutors also received necessary materials, all made possible through a Memorandum of Agreement signed between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Schools Division of Olongapo City at a ceremony held at the Olongapo Stake Center last 8 September 2023.
Beyond the material donations, a comprehensive strategy training session was conducted to guide the implementation of the program. Expert trainers John Jerson P. Constantino and Edward Ryan F. Gulam from Saranggani Province in Mindanao, facilitated the session, receiving warm introductions from Elder Lenard Huff, a Church Humanitarian Missionary. Engaged participants actively contributed to discussions, expressing their gratitude for the donations and the learning opportunities. The schools were given time to plan for the implementation, and they later presented their action plans. Sister Bonnie Huff added a touch of joy to the training with a nursery song and dance activity, inspiring everyone present.
During the event, messages of gratitude were shared by key figures in the education sector, including Ms. Loreta Figueroa, the Educational Program Supervisor for English, Senior Educational Program Specialist for Social Mobilization Ms. Arlene Dela Rea, Curriculum Implementation Division Chief Dr. Eleonor C. Cayabyab, and Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Imelda P. Macaspac. Their words emphasized the impact this initiative would have on the learners in Olongapo City.
President Ricardo Asur, Olongapo Stake President, emphasized the importance of love and service as the driving force behind this humanitarian effort. His message resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the power of compassion in fostering positive change.
